This New Years printable game consists of twelve envelopes, each with a different challenge or game inside. To play, pull out envelopes as the party goes on, and follow the directions as a group. You can pull one every hour, in 30 minute intervals, or at random if you want to keep your guests on their toes. So I created my own version of a New Year's Mad Libs Game. It is a fun way to interact with your party guests and to pass the time as you are waiting to ring in the New Year. If you are not familiar with how Mad Libs work, I will give you a quick little run down on how to play. The Name Game from Activity Village is an easy New Year's Eve party game that's great for a large group of adults looking for a fun but laid back game to play. For this game, each guest will need to contribute some names to a large bowl. They can be names of celebrities, fictional characters, historical figures, and even people in the room.

New Year Games

New Year's Eve Scramble

Write a bunch of different words on a piece of paper that have to do with New Year's Eve and scramble the letters. The person who guesses the most words correctly wins a prize.
Predict the Future: Throughout the party, present a magazine picture to each table of kids. These pictures should show something from the past year, such as a winning football game, a new toy, a political event, etc. Each table of kids must make a prediction for the next year, based on the picture. For example: The Yankees will win the pennant, Bill Clinton will become a rock star, the president will be a woman, and so on. Keep providing pictures after each course for the kids' predictions.

Some other fun ideas that will keep the kids busy for hours until the clock strikes midnight are to have them create their own time capsule, strike a piñata, make New Year's resolutions (and guess whose resolutions they are), decorate cookies, and have a huge indoor treasure hunt with clues.

Naming of Candy

For this you need: About 6 different candies that have given names like M&M's, Crunch, Wrigley's, etc. 1 Die (or 2 dice if the crowd is very large) Everyone is seated on the floor in a circle. Packaged candy bars or candy are placed in the middle of the circle. Everyone starts by saying their own names. The leader then makes sure that everyone knows what candy is in the middle. someone begins by rolling the dice. If they roll a 6, they can take one of the candies in the middle. The die continues to go quickly around the circle while people keep picking up candy. When all of the candies are taken, people then can get other people's candy. In order to get their candy, they must state the person's first name and the name of the candy they hold. The person who rolls a 6 and matches the name of the candy and the person takes the other's candy. If they forget either name, they miss their turn and the dice goes to the next person and they continue to roll. (One person can get more than one candy and people can hide the candy behind their back). This is a great way of getting to know people's name and how to get your favorite candies!

Celebrity hunt

Everyone writes the name of a celebrity, famous person or character on a piece of paper which they stick to the forehead of the player on their left (use tape or office Post-It notes). Make sure they don't see the name. List down the activity(s) or event(s) which has made them famous( but no names). Paste the paper up on the wall so that every guest can see it. This will act as cues and give the participants a direction to make guessing. Now the game starts. Everyone else can see your forehead. The objective is to work out who you are. Going around the table, each payer takes a turn to ask the party questions about who they are - answers can be YES or NO only. If you get a YES you may continue asking, if you get a NO play moves on to the left. Last person to guess their name is the loser. Simple, but very absorbing.

The Grouping Game

This is a good game to play as a mixer. It is a fun, fast moving game. It starts out as everyone collects in one big group. The leader initially calls out a number, usually a number between two and fifteen. The number shouldn't be more than half of the number of total participants. When the number is called out everyone must try to collect in a group that contains that number of people. The group members should be latching arms or have their arms wrapped around each other so that the leader can see who is in the group. If someone cannot enter a group because the number of required members has been reached, he is out of the game. As different numbers are successively called out the number of participants gets smaller and smaller. Eventually, there are less than ten people. The last group, or winning group, should have anywhere from two to five people.

Musical Chairs

The old favorite. With one fewer chairs than people, a short snippet of music is played while the people move around the room. All the chairs are placed in the middle of the room or arranged in a corner, all facing back on the wall. When the music stops everyone tries to sit on a vacant chair. (Only one person per chair) The person who doesn't find a chair is 'out'. One chair is taken away and the game continues until only one person (The Winner) is left.

Pass It On

Sit close together in two lines facing the same direction. The person in the front of each line rolls a die. When one of them gets a six, both of them pass a small object (a jack, a ball, a bracelet) to the person behind them who passes it on until it reaches the end. When it gets to the last person, that person must get up and race to the front of the line with the object and sit down. The person who sits down first, gets to sit in the front of the line. The person who was second to sit down, goes back to his or her spot. Whichever line rotates from back to front first, wins.

Winking Murder

All except the detective sit in a circle while the detective waits outside. One person from the circle is elected to be the murderer, and then the Detective is called back to stand in the circle. When he is ready, the Murderer winks at people in the circle. Anyone who sees that they have been winked at lets out a blood-curdling scream and dies. The Detective has three attempts to guess the murderer.

Pass the Orange

Arrange for teams of about 8 to stand in a line, one behind the other (arranged - boy, girl, boy,.). Give each team an orange which the first person should tuck under his chin. This should be passed to the person behind. When the orange gets to the last person, they come to the front of the line and start again. The winning team is the first one which gets their starting person to the front again.

Guessing the resolutions

Make each of your guests write down 5 resolutions, each on its own slip of paper. Pokemon generations download pc. Pull one slip of paper out of a basket at a time and read it out loud. Everyone has to write down who they think made each resolution. At the end of the readings, the person who guessed the most correctly wins a prize. Read some of the wrong guesses out loud for fun!

Word guessing

Write down 100 words on index cards such as stare, grin, blink, giggle, laugh, plate, shoelace, thread or any word you like.
Stack the cards and put them in the center of the room. Divide the players into 2 teams and seat them opposite each other. Set the timer or stopwatch for one minute. Have the first player from Team One draw a card from the pile and give clues to the word to his/her teammates before the timer ends the play.
So, if the word is 'laugh', the team member might say, 'What you do if someone tells you a joke?' Players from
Team One try to guess the word; if they are successful before the time is up, they get a point. If the timer runs out and the word is not guessed, the other team gets a bonus point. Take turns until all the cards are exhausted, and then add up points to see who wins.

Fun photos

Take the picture of each of your guests with the digital camera. Have them make a funny face and be sure to tell them there is a prize for the best face. After all the pictures have been taken, download them to your computer or laptop and ask everyone to gather around the monitor. The winner will be judged on the greatest laughter.

Super hearing

Play super hearing. Arrange yourselves into 2 groups. Ask one member from the group to identify the mysterious recorded sounds and the game continues thus with the teams securing a point on giving a correct answer.

Party games have been a huge part of my Christmas and New Year ever since I was young.

It is a tradition that has grown over the years, and it's now part of my role at Christmas to plan the after lunch entertainment.

As time has passed, and my friendship group has extended with many children, I am now known as the party organiser, making sure all ages are included in playing games – not just the Christmas season, but for Easter, birthdays, Halloween, and other special occasions. Play online pokies.

This Christmas, I have tried to think of games we have all enjoyed in the past and how to transfer them to Zoom games that will be enjoyed by all.

Being a primary school teacher for over 15 years, I feel strongly about families sharing the fun and laughter together and the skills that are learnt through playing traditional games are valuable to all children and even adults too!

Here's my pick of favourite games to play over Zoom this Christmas and New Year.

Categories

A simple yet frustratingly fun game

Think of 10 categories, for example Film, Vegetable, Country, Food, TV Shows etc, then randomly pick a letter from the alphabet. (We usually choose a letter by opening a magazine, pointing at a page without looking and then seeing what letter our finger has landed on.)

In one minute, try to think of things to fit as many of the categories as you can, with all the answers beginning with the letter selected. For example, if the letter is 'C', and the categories included TV Shows, Food and Colours, you could write down 'Countryfile', 'Crisps' and 'Cyan'.

When the minute is up, give yourself a point for each one you get correct. But, if someone else has the same answer, you don't get a point.

Add up the amount you got correct to give your score.

Switcharoo

Hilarious tongue twister style game

You'll need someone to be quizmaster for this one and prepare, in advance, some simple questions (which people are likely to know the answers to) that have someone's name as the answer.

For example, who is married to David Beckham?

The aim of the game is to answer but by switching the first letter of the forename and surname.

So, who is married to David Beckham? Bictoria Veckham.

Keep track of how many you get right during the one-minute timer.

Memory match

Challenge your memory!

Someone will need to take charge of this game and prepare, in advance, a simple, silent video of 20 items relating to Christmas. This can be filmed on your phone camera.

When it comes to filming, think of the conveyor belt in the TV classic, The Generation Game and don't forget to include ‘a cuddly toy'.

Then, on the big day, share your screen and let the guests watch the video. Give them two minutes to write down as many items as they can remember. The winner is the team who remembered the most correct objects.

If you're the organiser, remember to have a written list of all the items to hand, too – as it's then easier when teams total up their correct answers.

This much loved game is a firm favourite with all the kids in our circle of friends and family. The organiser will need to come up with a list of 10 Christmas related items that your guests have to run off and find. Call the items out, one at a time: first back gets a point. It's as simple as that.

But, make it a little bit more interesting by asking your guests to do more complicated things, for example, dress up as Santa or wrap a present up.

Have fun with this word association game, which everyone can join in with. Pick a topic and take it in turns to each think of a word related to the theme – the catch, you must not show your teeth!

(If you were playing altogether in the same room, you'd go round in a circle with everyone taking it in turns to say a word – on Zoom, you'll need to agree on an order before you start.)

The point of the game is your lips must cover your teeth during the whole game – you're not allowed to cover your mouth with your hand either – and also… no hesitation. The faster the game is played, the funnier. You are out if you show your teeth.

Winner is last one to have their teeth still covered.

After Eight

Messy but fun after dinner game

The classic After Eight mint game can still be loved and enjoyed via Zoom.

Balance an After Eight mint on the top of your forehead and without using anything but your face, try to manoeuvre the mint into your mouth. First one to get the mint to their mouth wins.

You may want to play this in teams so you can keep an eye on the entertaining faces that are being pulled.

5 second rule

A quick thinking game

Five second rule is just that – you have five seconds to answer!

Ask your guests to name three things within a five second time frame, for example, name three Christmas carols, three Christmas films etc. Best casino table games.

Sounds easy, but when your mind goes blank it's tricky.

One point for answering within the time frame.

Paper plate drawing

A simple but fun game

You need one host for this game, someone who is in charge of the instructions. Each guest holds a paper plate on top of their head, a pen for drawing and listens carefully to the instructions given. The paper plate must not come off your head until the host says they are finished.

Try to draw a Christmas scene, using the five commands given by your host, for example:

1. Draw a Christmas tree.
2. Now draw a star on the top.
3. Next draw tinsel on the tree.
4. Then draw three gifts under the tree.
5. Finally draw some baubles on the tree.

When finished, show your picture and the host decides a winner.

Pipe cleaner game

Crafty and relaxing game

This is an old family favourite. Creating objects using only crafting pipe cleaners – set the teams a task to make a Christmas decoration.

Teams have five minutes to create something. Share the end results and everyone can vote on favourite creation.

This is good to play if you need a relaxed activity. Have a list of questions, answer the questions and learn about your guests. No winners – just for fun!

Would you rather?

Ask your guests some 'would you rather?' questions… the more random the better.

Try and make it Christmas related, for example, would you rather have reindeer hooves for feet or elves ears?

Christmas sing-a-long

Sing along to your favourite Christmas tunes and carols – find some videos with lyrics and share the screen on Zoom so you all have the same timings. Then sing along together.
